La SAPE — la Société d’Ambianceures et Personnes Elégantes (The Society of Entertaineres and Elegant People) —, is a fascinating movement, rich in visual and ideological meaning, highlighted by the two different gazes of Héctor Mediavilla and Baudouin Mouanda. The two photographers, one Spanish and the other Congolese, confront their visions; one as an outside observer examines the psychological and social complexity of these protagonists, evoking an oneiric reality, poetic and romantic where the sapeurs seem to dream their lives; the other, knowledgeable on the situation of his compatriots, presents a dynamic and creative manifestation, accentuating the theatrical and exhibitionist side of the phenomenon, showing us dandies who live their dream.
