CHIAPAS / MAT JACOB
> Exhibition curation / exhibition scenography / graphic design of communication tools
When in 1994 the world discovers the uprising of the Chiapas Indians, in one of the poorest states in Mexico, few realize that it’s of a new and durable form of struggle, rapidly become an emblem of the anti-globalist movement, which Mat Jacob’s lens bears witness to.
This work, carried on over twenty years, documents with empathy and exactitude the formidable saga of a revolt that proclaims itself nonviolent and that advocates self-determination and the solidarity of autonomous communities rather than access to formal power. Cultural as much as it is political, the Zapatista movement, impelled by the enigmatic deputy commander Marcos, durably benefits from the national popularity and international recognition that define its influence. These photographs speak of the dignity and the determination of these men and women writing a new page of the long and captivating history of the struggles for freedom.
